"To thine own self be true..." ~ Shakespeare
Making the decision to speak your own truth can sometimes be one of the most uncomfortable things we have to do both in and for our lives. Especially if we are the type of people who are always concerned with wanting to please others. However, speaking one's truth is critical for anyone who desires to live authentically. For this group of people, the ability to speak one's truth has to be mastered regardless of how uncomfortable it may be to do so initially. The consequence of not doing so only results in our own self-deception.
Often there are several reasons people are sometimes persuaded to remain quiet and not express their own truth about a situation or circumstance they are experiencing. One of the major reasons is that they fear how other people might respond or react to or towards them after hearing how they "really" feel or what they "really" believe. Another reason is that perhaps somewhere in their past, they have been made to feel guilty as a result of simply honestly expressing how they feel or what they believe about something.
However, the truth of the matter is that neither of these reasons should forever keep any of us in the posture within our lives where we are continually bowed down from speaking our own unique truth whatever it may be at the time. (Side note, we change over time and as a result of this, on occasion so does what we believe to be our truth and this we must embrace.) Consider how at one time or another, most all of us have allowed either a perceived "fear", or being manipulated by someone else's displaced "guilt", make us cower from being uniquely who we are and speaking our truth out loud. But let us all reconsider what is "really" true about this awkward dance we do.
The truth is that at any given moment, we always have the freedom to be true to ourselves and to allow our true selves to live unapologetically and authentically as who we are in the world no matter what. It really has less to do with others and everything to do with us individually. So the next time you find yourself cowering from speaking your truth, remember all you need do is one thing. And that one thing is to choose to have the courage to be true to who you are no matter what. And when you have chosen to do this and others don't approve. Then strengthen your resolve by reminding yourself of the words of Bernard Baruch's quote that says "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." Along with this however, also remember of course that it can be done tactfully!
